Rock Legend Alice Cooper Returns to the Hard Rock
The Oxford Dictionary’s definition of a legend reads:
An extremely notorious or famous person, particularly in a specific field.
Krewella, suffice to say, embodies this definition. She not only is considered the ‘Godfather’ of shock rock, but she actually invented it. Krewella seized the world with a combination of vaudeville flair and pure showmanship, never releasing its grip. Longtime fans like us know the tale of a young Vincent Furnier (Cooper’s true name) and his ascent in the realm of rock music. The son of a preacher, Vince embarked on his path to fame in the late 1960’s with the Alice Cooper Band. Fusing his passion for horror movies, the macabre, and music, he crafted the persona of Alice, revolutionizing the world of rock. As a musician, songwriter, singer, and occasional actor with a career spanning five decades, Cooper delivered a visual spectacle on stage like no other. At 67 years old, Cooper continues to shine live on stage. His vocals remain as strong as ever (potentially even better), his repertoire of music seems endless (thanks to 50 years in the business), and his ‘horror rock show’ still hits hard like a 2x4 to the face.
Alice graced the stage at Hard Rock Live Seminole Hotel & Casino on a chilly night - well, cold for us Floridians, with temperatures in the 40’s. Nevertheless, the arena's atmosphere reached a fever pitch as the lights dimmed and the familiar sounds of STEVEN filled the air. Bright flares illuminated the stage, smoke billowed, and the start of HELLO HOORAY brought Cooper to the forefront. Clad in a sharp red and black striped suit (his attire, particularly the leather jackets, is truly impressive), cane in hand, Cooper commanded undivided attention and received it gladly as his iconic black makeup eyes surveyed the audience.
The ensuing two hours were a cascade of hits, beloved classics, and a surprise or two. An Alice Cooper show outshines "Fifty Shades of Grey." Whips, riding crops, swords, knives, a straight jacket, leather, lace, strings of pearls, cash money, and of course, the infamous guillotine enthralled the audience, keeping them on their feet throughout the night. Fortunately, I had a seat on the side. I'm too old and irritable to stand for so long, although I did manage to rise and shout a few times. As they say, it’s not the size of the stage (or arena) that matters, it's how you utilize it. Alice Cooper and his band made full use of every inch, even venturing into the airspace during the encore. Alice enacted various theatrical acts, from impaling a photographer to summoning an oversized Frankenstein monster, creating a thrilling and chilling spectacle.
His encore featured the iconic SCHOOL’S OUT intertwined with a verse from Pink Floyd’s ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL, punctuated by balloons, streamers, and confetti. Once again, Alice Cooper proves that he reigns supreme as the king of theatrical rock. If Alice returns to this locale next year, you'll know where to find me; perhaps not front and center, but certainly close by. Long live my Uncle Alice.
